CPD & Masterclasses

A structured annual development framework, and twenty-three live Masterclass programmes to meet it with.

The Requirement

Thirty hours a year, at every assessed grade

When this applies. The CPD Regulation takes effect on 1 January 2027, the first CPD Year, for all members. Until then, nothing about your CPD obligations changes.

Professional Members at Associate, Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow grades complete a minimum of 30 CPD hours per year. The requirement is uniform across the grades: seniority is reflected not in additional hours but in the nature, complexity, and composition of the CPD undertaken.

ComponentHoursRequirement
Total CPD hours30Mandatory
Structured CPD (minimum)15 (50%)Mandatory — formal, facilitated learning
Ethics and professional conduct (minimum)3Mandatory; within the total
Sustainability and ESG (minimum)2Mandatory; within the total; rising to 3 from 2028
Self-directed CPD (maximum)15Optional balance — reading, mentoring, on-the-job learning
Reflective practice recordsMinimum one per CPD year
What counts as Structured? If someone qualified designed the learning and led you through it, it is likely Structured — IAM Certified Programmes, IAM CPD courses, Masterclasses, and Endorsed qualifications and courses always qualify. If you directed your own learning, it is self-directed. Affiliate, Student, Retired, and Honorary categories are exempt from mandatory CPD but encouraged to keep developing.

Planning Your Year

CPD starts with honest self-assessment

  • Identify your current Career Stage against the IAM Professional Standards
  • Review your competence across the seven Competency Domains using the Progression Matrix
  • Choose two or three priority domains and build your plan around them
  • Record each activity on the IAM Portal within 30 days of completion
  • Confirm your annual summary — including one reflective practice record — after the CPD year closes

Mentoring counts for both mentor and mentee, and CPD undertaken for another professional body counts here too when it meets the requirements and is recorded with the Institute.

The Rules In Brief

Recording, audit, and support

Recording

Within 30 days

Record each activity on the Platform within 30 days of completion (December activities by 31 January), keep outcome evidence for three years, and confirm your annual summary by 31 January.

Audit

5% each year

A random sample of at least five per cent of members is audited annually. Respond within 30 days; 30 more to rectify any deficiency. Record as you go and attach evidence, and an audit typically clears without further correspondence.

Life Events

Exemptions up to 24 months

For illness, parental leave, caring, unemployment, bereavement, or a career break — parental leave adjusted automatically pro-rata. You remain in Good Standing throughout an exemption.

Falling behind? Non-compliance follows a supportive three-stage procedure — a 60-day remediation notice, then a completion plan with CPD Conditional status, and only then Board referral. The full provisions, counting rules, and evidence requirements are on the Regulations page.
