Individual Membership
Professional recognition at every stage of an administrative management career — from the wider workforce to the boardroom.
The Framework
Eleven categories at a glance
Four assessed grades — Associate, Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow — correspond to the four assessed Career Stages of the IAM Professional Standards. Around them sit the Affiliate tier for the wider administrative workforce, Student Membership for learners, Retired grades, and Honorary Fellowship conferred by the Board.
| Category | Designation | Career Stage | In brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Fellow | SFInstAM | Stage 4 — Strategic Leader | Board-level and profession-shaping leaders; the highest assessed grade. |
| Fellow | FInstAM | Stage 3 — Strategic Professional | Senior professionals whose work shapes functions and influences organisational decisions. |
| Member | MInstAM | Stage 2 — Professional | Established professionals managing processes, projects, budgets, or people. |
| Associate | AInstAM | Stage 1 — Practitioner | Capable practitioners working with growing independence. |
| Honorary Fellow | HonFInstAM | Conferred by the Board | Distinguished contribution to the profession. Held for life unless rescinded; no CPD requirement; bound by the Code. |
| Senior Fellow (Retired) | SFInstAM (Rtd) | Retired from practice | Members who held Senior Fellow, Fellow, or Member grade at the time of transition keep their designation with the (Rtd) suffix. No CPD requirement; still bound by the Code. |
| Fellow (Retired) | FInstAM (Rtd) | ||
| Member (Retired) | MInstAM (Rtd) | ||
| Affiliate | “IAM Affiliate” | Below the assessed framework | Open-access workforce recognition and a destination grade in its own right. No post-nominal; bound by the Code. |
| Student Member | “Student Member” | During enrolment | Evidence of current enrolment on a recognised programme of study. No post-nominal; bound by the Code for the duration of enrolment. |
| Subscriber | — | Outside the framework | A non-member registration tier. Not a member of the profession, no mandatory CPD, no designation of any kind. |
Getting in
Three parallel routes, all decided on evidence
The Institute recognises that competence is reached by different paths. All three routes lead to the same grade, carry the same post-nominal, and are assessed against the same Progression Matrix — and all three are completed entirely in your own account on the IAM Portal.
Route one
Certified Programme
Complete the IAM Certified Programme for the Career Stage and add the qualifying experience. Your completion is verified against the Register of Programme Completers, so the assessment work is already done.
The five programmesRoute two
Recognition of Prior Learning
Already hold a relevant qualification? Supply evidence of it alongside your curriculum vitae and Statements of Professional Experience. Level comparisons are generic and jurisdiction-neutral.
What counts as prior learningRoute three
Experience-Assessed
No formal qualification, but the years and the responsibility? Your Statements of Professional Experience carry the application, assessed against the Progression Matrix. Experience is judged on what you actually do, never on your job title.
How experience is assessedWhat You Receive
Core benefits at every assessed grade
- Use of the descriptive title and post-nominal designation of your grade
- A verifiable digital badge, digital certificate, and digital membership card
- Listing in the IAM Directory, with employer verification through Verify a Member
- Access to the IAM Portal, CPD recording tools, and CPD resources
- Member rates for IAM events, courses, webinars, and conferences
- Access to the IAM Mentoring and Professional Supervision Framework — as mentee or mentor
- Participation in IAM consultations, committees, advisory panels, and working groups
Fellows may additionally nominate candidates for Honorary Fellowship and are eligible for senior volunteer and representative roles; Senior Fellows may be appointed to the assessment and standards panels that write and moderate the Institute’s assessment instruments.
Your Obligation
CPD keeps the designation meaningful
Members at the four assessed grades complete 30 hours of CPD each year — at least 15 of them Structured, including 3 hours of ethics and 2 of sustainability — with one reflective practice record. The requirement is uniform at every grade: seniority is reflected in the nature and complexity of the CPD, not in extra hours.
The detail
Minimum admission criteria by grade and route
Established by Regulation 3 of the Membership Regulation. Meeting the minimum criteria makes an application eligible for assessment against the Progression Matrix; it does not of itself guarantee admission.
| Grade | Certified Programme route | Recognition of Prior Learning route | Experience-Assessed route |
|---|---|---|---|
| AInstAM | Practitioner Certified Programme + 1 year of qualifying experience | Higher technical or early undergraduate learning + 1 year of qualifying experience | 3 years of qualifying experience |
| MInstAM | Professional Certified Programme + 2 years including 1 managerial or supervisory | Completed first degree + 2 years including 1 managerial or supervisory | 5 years including 1 managerial or supervisory |
| FInstAM | Strategic Professional Certified Programme + 5 years including 3 senior | Postgraduate learning + 5 years including 3 senior | 10 years including 3 senior |
| SFInstAM | Strategic Leader Certified Programme + 8 years senior including 3 at board level | Advanced postgraduate or executive learning + 8 years including 3 at board level | 15 years including 3 at board level |
The evidence every route requires
| Evidence | What it is |
|---|---|
| Curriculum vitae | Your professional history, with each role dated and its responsibilities described. |
| Evidence of qualifications | Certificates and transcripts for the qualifications you rely on, where your route uses them. |
| Statements of Professional Experience | Completed in the form set out in Schedule A of the Membership Regulation, and assessed against the Progression Matrix and the Annex A competence descriptions. |
| Identity verification | Confirmation of who you are, completed electronically when you create your account. |
Staying Current
Good Standing, renewal, and progression
Good Standing
What it means
Subscription current, CPD met where applicable, no disciplinary sanction in effect, and compliance with the Code of Ethics. Post-nominals and directory listing depend on it, and Verify a Member shows the current position.
Life Events
Support when you need it
CPD exemptions of up to 24 months for illness, parental leave, caring, unemployment, or bereavement — with parental leave adjusted automatically pro-rata. You remain in Good Standing throughout.
The provisionsMoving Up
Upgrading your grade
Apply at any time for a higher grade, assessed against that grade's criteria and route. Your existing grade and rights continue until the decision — and are unaffected if the application is refused.
How upgrades workThe process
How to apply, and how quickly you will know
The whole application is completed online, on the IAM Portal.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | Create your account and verify your identity. Registration on the IAM Portal is free, and identity is confirmed electronically — no certified copies, no post. |
| 2 | Let the Grade Navigator place you. Enter your qualifications and experience and the tool recommends your grade and route against the Progression Matrix. It runs entirely on your own device and sends nothing anywhere. |
| 3 | Assemble your evidence. Your curriculum vitae, evidence of your qualifications where your route uses them, and your Statements of Professional Experience in the Schedule A form. |
| 4 | Declare and submit. You confirm the information is accurate and the work is your own, under the Code of Ethics. |

Money Matters
Fees, fairly structured
Annual subscriptions for the assessed grades are structured in three tiers by your country of residence, following the World Bank income classification — Tier 1 high-income, Tier 2 middle-income, Tier 3 low-income — so the profession is affordable in every economy. The standard never varies; only the price does. All fees are in pounds sterling, and the current Fee Schedule is published on this website with the total joining cost shown prominently at the point of application.
On Joining
One-off application fee
Payable once, on first application at an assessed grade — never on renewals, and never by Affiliates, Students, or Subscribers. Not tiered by country, and the Board may waive or reduce it in cases of financial hardship.
Consumer Protection
14-day cooling-off
On joining and again at every annual renewal, with a full refund of the subscription fee on cancellation within the period. Fees are payable annually in advance, with pro-rata adjustment for mid-year grade upgrades.
Worth Knowing
Tax relief may apply
In many jurisdictions, subscriptions to recognised professional bodies qualify for tax relief or deduction — consult your local tax authority or adviser for your position. Honorary Fellows pay no fees at all.
Keeping Membership Alive
Renewal, lapse, and reinstatement
| Situation | What the Regulation provides |
|---|---|
| Renewal | Annually in advance from your admission or renewal date, with a fresh 14-day cooling-off period each year. |
| Lapse | Non-renewal within 60 calendar days of the due date lapses your membership: post-nominals, Platform access, directory listing, and badge use are suspended. |
| Reinstatement — within 12 months | Simply pay the outstanding fee and your membership is reinstated. |
| Reinstatement — within 3 years | After termination, a simplified route: a written request, the current subscription, and the application fee — no new assessment required. |
| After 3 years | A fresh application in full under Regulation 3. |
| Retirement | Members, Fellows, and Senior Fellows leaving active practice keep their post-nominals with the (Rtd) suffix, pay a reduced fee, carry no mandatory CPD, and may join the IAM mentor panel through Active Retired status. |
| Resignation | You may resign at any time; certificates, cards, and badges remain the property of the Institute and use of designations ceases. |
