Member Benefits
What every Professional Member receives from the Institute, the tax relief available on the subscription, and the partner services arranged for members.
From the Institute
The core benefits, at every assessed grade
These are the benefits the Institute itself provides, established by Regulation 7 of the Membership Regulation. They are the reason to hold a grade, and they are the same whichever country you live in.
| Benefit | What it delivers |
|---|---|
| A grade that means something | Eleven categories from Subscriber and Student through Affiliate, Associate, Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow to Honorary Fellow and the Retired grades. Assessed grades are awarded by the Institute on verified evidence, against the Progression Matrix, within published maximum periods. |
| Post-nominals and verification | AInstAM, MInstAM, FInstAM, or SFInstAM on every signature and profile; a public Directory entry at the privacy level you choose; free verification of your standing by anyone, at any time. |
| A structured route to the next grade | Three routes at every assessed grade — Certified Programme, Recognition of Prior Learning, and Experience-Assessed — so formal learning and workplace competence are recognised equally. |
| The Certified Programmes | Five Programmes, one for each Career Stage, each with three assessment opportunities included, delivered by the Institute and by Recognised Centres and credentialed by the Institute. |
| Learning that fits the week | 250 Professional Courses of one to two hours; 300 Practice Library lessons of fifteen to twenty minutes; twenty-three Masterclasses at three live levels; twelve Role Mastery courses — all mapped to the Standards and counting as Structured CPD. |
| Tools that run on your device | The Grade Navigator, Progression Profiler, IAM Checkpoint, and CPD Planner diagnose, test, and plan against the Standards and send nothing anywhere. |
| A CPD scheme you can meet | Thirty hours a year, half Structured, with ethics and sustainability minima, a two-or-three-domain planning discipline, and recognition of learning your employer already provides. |
| Standing behind you | The Code of Ethics, a confidential advice channel, protections for raising concerns, and an appeals and complaints process independent of the decision-maker. |
| Mentoring | The Mentoring and Professional Supervision Framework, as mentee or, subject to the criteria, as mentor — counting as CPD for both. |
Tax relief on your subscription
The Institute is on HM Revenue and Customs’ List 3
In many jurisdictions a professional subscription is deductible against earnings. In the United Kingdom the position is specific and favourable.
What qualifies
The subscription, including VAT
Because the Institute appears on HMRC’s list of approved professional organisations and learned societies (List 3), a UK taxpayer may claim the annual IAM subscription, including its VAT element, as an allowable employment-related expense. The one-off application fee is not covered.
How to claim
Employee or self-employed
If you are an employee, claim through an adjustment to your tax code. If you are self-employed, claim the subscription as a deductible cost on your tax return.
Previous years
Up to four years back
If you have not claimed before, relief can be claimed for up to four previous years as well as the current one.
Arranged for members
Partner services
Third-party services the Institute has arranged for members, provided by the partner on the partner’s own terms. Access details are on the IAM Portal after sign-in, so that the benefit remains a benefit of membership.
Expert advice with Croner
Through your membership you have access to free advice and monthly webinars from the Institute’s partner Croner — specialists in employment law, HR, health and safety, and tax. You do not need to instruct a solicitor for employment-law advice, or engage a consultant to tighten up your policies and procedures.
- 24/7 HR and employment law advice — conduct queries, sickness and absence, redundancy, dismissal, legislation changes, contracts.
- Commercial legal support — data protection, commercial contracts, insolvency, property.
- Health and safety assistance — fire safety, environmental legislation, hazard management, accident reporting, premises management, the law and your responsibilities.
- Tax matters — fee protection, tax and VAT consultancy, compliance checks, status.
- Free monthly webinars presented by industry experts, covering the topics members ask about most.
Additional Croner services — HR software, health and safety software, site risk visits, tribunal support, on-site HR meeting support, and legal insurance — are available to members at preferential rates.
The telephone line and the reference you quote are shown to members after sign-in, so that the service is available only to those entitled to it.
