Membership & CPD Regulations
The binding rules of the profession — the IAM Membership Regulation (IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001) and the IAM CPD Regulation (IAM-CPD-REG-2026-001), both effective 1 January 2027, on a two-year review cycle.
IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001
The Membership Regulation
Made under Article 55(1) of the Articles of Association, the Membership Regulation establishes the tiers and grades, the admission criteria and routes, fees and renewal, Good Standing, conduct and discipline, and the transition for existing members. This page summarises it; the Regulation itself is the authoritative text and takes precedence over any summary.
Admission — minimum criteria by grade and route (Regulation 3)
Every application is assessed against the IAM Professional Standards, including the Progression Matrix descriptors for the Career Stage of the grade sought. Meeting the minimum criteria makes an application eligible for assessment; it does not of itself guarantee admission.
| Grade | Certified Programme route | RPL route | Experience-Assessed route |

Key provisions at a glance
| Matter | What the Regulation provides |
|---|---|
| Age (Reg 3.10) | Affiliate and assessed Professional Membership: 18 or over. Student Membership: 16 or over. |
| Refusal and review (Reg 3.6) | A refused applicant may request written grounds, may seek a review under the Appeals and Complaints Policy, and may reapply after not less than six months. |
| Accuracy (Reg 3.8) | Applicants must provide accurate, complete information; the Institute may verify qualifications, experience, and identity, and may terminate membership obtained on false information. |
| Upgrades (Reg 3.9) | A member may apply at any time for a higher grade, assessed against that grade's criteria and route; the existing grade and rights continue until the decision and are unaffected by a refusal. |
| Adjustments (Reg 3.7) | Reasonable adjustments to application and assessment for applicants with a disability, in accordance with applicable equality legislation. |
| Equality (Reg 11.2) | No refusal or less favourable treatment on grounds of age, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief, or any other protected characteristic. |
| International (Reg 11.5) | Membership is open worldwide; subscription fees are tiered by country of residence; fees are denominated in pounds sterling. |
| Reciprocal recognition (Reg 11.7) | The Board may agree reciprocal recognition with other professional bodies, allowing expedited admission — without conferring automatic admission. |
| Notice of change (Reg 2.4) | Rights and obligations of a grade may be varied only on not less than 60 days' written notice, with at least 30 days' member consultation for substantive changes. |
| Existing members (Reg 12.5) | Anyone holding a grade on 31 December 2026 continues at the corresponding grade from 1 January 2027 — no re-application, no re-assessment. New fees and terms apply from each member's first renewal after that date. |
Good Standing
Good Standing means your subscription is current, CPD obligations are met (where applicable), no disciplinary sanction is in effect, and you comply with the IAM Code of Ethics and the Prevention of Harassment Policy. Post-nominals may be used only while in Good Standing, and the Verify a Member facility shows the current position. On admission, assessed members receive confirmation of post-nominal entitlement, a verifiable digital badge, and listing in the IAM Directory — with a directory privacy option available, verification remaining possible in all cases.

The CPD Regulation
The CPD Regulation establishes the continuing professional development obligation for all Professional Members at the four assessed grades. The CPD Year runs 1 January to 31 December; members admitted during a calendar year are exempt for that partial year, and hours may not be carried forward between years.
The annual requirement (Regulations 2 and 5–6)
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Total CPD | 30 hours per CPD Year, uniform across Associate, Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow. |
| Structured CPD | Minimum 15 hours (50%) — formal, facilitated learning designed and led by a qualified instructor, facilitator, or institution. IAM Certified Programmes, IAM CPD courses, and Endorsed offerings always qualify. |
| Ethics | Minimum 3 hours addressing ethics and professional conduct — the nine Principles of the Code, ethical decision-making, data protection, EDI, and professional conduct. |
| Sustainability | Minimum 2 hours (rising to 3 from the 2028 CPD Year) — ESG fundamentals, climate and carbon, reporting frameworks, sustainable procurement, green office management, and social value. |
| Reflective practice | Minimum one reflective practice record per CPD Year — the member's own work, evidencing their own judgement and learning. |
| Self-directed | Up to 15 hours: professional reading, informal mentoring, on-the-job learning. Counts to the total, never to the Structured minimum. |
Counting rules (Regulation 4.4)
- One CPD hour is 60 minutes of qualifying activity, recorded in units of not less than 15 minutes — travel and breaks excluded
- Preparing and delivering teaching or written work counts once per topic per year, including reasonable preparation time
- Mentoring counts for both mentor and mentee; an activity may be counted in one CPD Year only
- CPD undertaken for another professional body counts where it meets the requirements and is recorded with the Institute
- Ethics and sustainability hours sit within the 30-hour total; one activity may be apportioned between the two only where it materially addresses both
Recording, evidence, and audit (Regulations 8–9)
| Obligation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Record within 30 days | Each activity is recorded on the IAM Membership Platform within 30 calendar days of completion; December activities may be recorded until 31 January. |
| Keep outcome evidence | Evidence of learning outcomes — certificates of competency, project outputs, reflective summaries, not attendance certificates alone — retained for three years. |
| Annual summary | Confirm your annual CPD summary, including the Competency Domains covered, by 31 January following the CPD Year. |
| Audit | A random sample of not less than 5% of members is audited each year, plus any member selected for cause. Members respond within 30 calendar days and have 30 further days to rectify any deficiency. Selection is routine quality assurance, not an accusation. |
Exemptions and adjustments (Regulation 10)
Temporary exemptions of up to 24 months may be granted for long-term illness, parental leave, caring responsibilities, unemployment, bereavement, career break, or other exceptional circumstances — apply to membership@instam.org. Parental leave attracts an automatic pro-rata adjustment on notification through the Platform, with no formal application. Part-year exemptions reduce the requirement and the minima in proportion, and members with a disability may request adjustments to how CPD is recorded and evidenced. During an exemption you retain all rights and remain in Good Standing.
Non-compliance — the three-stage procedure (Regulation 12)
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 | A remediation notice with 60 days to complete the outstanding requirement. Activity completed but not recorded is resolved here as a recording deficiency. |
| Stage 2 | A formal warning with a mandatory completion plan and "CPD Conditional" status: the member is not in Good Standing, may not use their post-nominals, and is shown as such by Verify a Member — with 30 further days. |
| Stage 3 | Referral to the Board for final sanction under Regulation 9 of the Membership Regulation. |
