Section one
Joining the Institute
Which grade, which route, and whether you qualify.
Which grade is right for me?
The four assessed grades follow the four Career Stages of the Professional Standards. Associate (AInstAM) for capable administrators working with growing independence; Member (MInstAM) for established professionals managing processes, projects, budgets, or people; Fellow (FInstAM) for senior professionals shaping functions; Senior Fellow (SFInstAM) for leaders at or reporting into board level. Alongside them sit Affiliate, open to anyone in the administrative workforce, and Student Membership. The Grade Navigator on the Portal works it out from your record in a few minutes — that is the fastest honest answer.
How much experience do I need?
Broadly: Associate 1–3 years depending on route; Member 2–5 including at least one managerial or supervisory; Fellow 5–10 including three senior; Senior Fellow 8–15 including three at board level. The exact combination depends on which of the three routes you use — the full table is on the membership page.
Do I have to take a programme to join?
No. Every assessed grade can be reached by three parallel routes: completing the aligned IAM Certified Programme, Recognition of Prior Learning if you already hold a relevant qualification, or the Experience-Assessed route if you have the years and the responsibility but no formal qualification. All three lead to the same grade and the same post-nominal.
Does my job title matter?
No. Experience is assessed on the substance and responsibilities of the role. If your title is modest but your responsibilities are substantial, or the reverse, the assessment looks at what you actually do. Part-time experience counts in proportion, concurrent roles are counted once, and independent practice — including work as a virtual assistant — is assessed on exactly the same basis as employed experience.
Can I join from outside the United Kingdom?
Yes. Membership is worldwide and the requirements are written to be jurisdiction-neutral. Subscriptions are tiered by your country of residence, so the rate in a low-income economy is a quarter of the high-income rate. Everything — application, assessment, credential — is online.
I was a member before 2027. Do I have to reapply?
No. Existing members continue at the corresponding grade from 1 January 2027 without re-application or re-assessment, and the Board publishes a mapping for any former grade with no direct equivalent. New fees and terms apply from your first renewal after that date. If you want a higher grade, apply for an upgrade in the normal way.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes: 18 or over for Affiliate and the assessed grades, 16 or over for Student Membership.
Section two
Applying, and what happens next
The application is entirely online. Most people finish it in one sitting.
What does the application actually involve?
Four things. Create your account and verify your identity electronically. Run the Grade Navigator, which recommends your grade and route. Complete structured fields — roles, dates, scope, what you were accountable for — and upload your qualifications. Assemble your curriculum vitae, evidence of your qualifications where your route uses them, and your Statements of Professional Experience. Then declare and submit.
How quickly will I get a decision?
You receive an acknowledgement the moment you submit. The maximum decision periods are ten working days at Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow, seven at Associate, and five at Student, with admission automatic at Affiliate and Subscriber on registration and payment. The period runs from the working day after a complete application is received, is the same for every route at that grade, and stops while the Institute is awaiting information from you or a response to a verification enquiry. These are maxima — the Institute aims to decide sooner.
What are Statements of Professional Experience?
They are the form in which you set out your experience, completed as Schedule A of the Membership Regulation requires. Each statement covers what the role involved, what you were accountable for, and the scale of what you managed, and is assessed against the Progression Matrix and the Annex A competence descriptions. A template is provided, and Annex A of the Professional Standards lists the kinds of evidence commonly cited in each Competency Domain.
Can I use AI to complete my application?
Your Statements of Professional Experience must be your own work and evidence your own judgement. Work produced wholly or substantially by generative AI is grounds for refusal, and a false declaration is a disciplinary matter that can lead to termination and removal from the Register. The assessment is built around applied judgement in scenarios rather than recall, which is where borrowed answers show.
What if my application is refused?
You may request the grounds in writing, seek a review under the Appeals and Complaints Policy, and reapply after six months. A refused upgrade never affects the grade you already hold. If something merely falls short, you are told exactly what and given 60 days to fix it without reapplying or paying again.
I have a disability. Can adjustments be made?
Yes. Reasonable adjustments — extra time, alternative formats, assistive technology — are made on request under the IAM Reasonable Adjustments and Special Considerations Policy. Requests are confidential, never appear on your record, and are not visible to any employer or centre. See our Accessibility Statement.

Fees and payment
Every fee the Institute charges is published on the Fees page. The common questions:
What does membership cost?
Every amount the Institute charges is published in one place, on the Fees page — subscriptions by category and income tier, the one-off application fee, and the upgrade fee. Nothing is charged that does not appear there, and the total payable is shown before you commit.
Why is my fee different from someone else’s?
Subscriptions are tiered by country of residence using the World Bank income classification — 100% in high-income economies, 50% in middle-income, 25% in low-income. The tier follows residence, not nationality, and is set at application and reviewed at renewal. The standard, the assessment, and the credential are identical in every tier.
What if I cannot afford it?
Tell us. The Board may waive or reduce the application fee, and hardship reductions on subscriptions are considered case by case. Write to membership@instam.org before you apply, not after.
Can I change my mind after joining?
Yes. A 14-day cooling-off period applies on joining and at every renewal, with a full refund of the subscription if you cancel within it. The application fee is not refundable because it funds the assessment, which has already happened.
Can I claim tax relief on my subscription?
In the United Kingdom the Institute appears on HM Revenue and Customs’ List 3, so a UK taxpayer’s subscription including VAT is an allowable employment-related expense and may be claimed for up to four previous years — employees through a tax-code adjustment, the self-employed on their return. The application fee is not covered. Outside the United Kingdom a professional subscription is deductible in many jurisdictions — check with your local tax authority or a qualified adviser. Subscriber registration is not a professional body subscription and is not expected to qualify.
Is there a joining discount through my employer?
Yes, if your employer holds Corporate Membership: subscriptions are discounted by band. See corporate fees.
Section four
Your designation, badge, and Directory entry
What you get to use, and who can see it.
When can I use my post-nominals?
From the date of admission, and for as long as you remain in Good Standing — subscription paid, CPD met, no sanction in effect, compliant with the Code. Use them on your CV, correspondence, business cards, websites, and professional profiles. Entitlement is suspended if you fall into CPD Conditional status and resumes when Good Standing is restored.
What are the correct forms?
AInstAM, MInstAM, FInstAM, SFInstAM; retired members add "(Rtd)", for example FInstAM (Rtd); Honorary Fellows use HonFInstAM. Affiliates and Student Members use the descriptive titles "IAM Affiliate" and "Student Member" and have no post-nominal. Subscribers may not use any IAM designation.
Can I use the IAM logo or crest?
Not without written consent. Your digital member badge may be used freely on professional profiles and stationery, but neither the badge nor the crest may be used in any way implying that the Institute endorses your business, products, services, or employer.
What is the IAM Directory?
A public, searchable register of members and students in Good Standing, on the IAM Portal — so employers and clients can find a recognised professional by grade, country, sector, Competency Domain, or mentoring availability. How the Directory works.
Can I keep my Directory entry private?
Yes, at three levels: a full entry, a limited entry showing only name, grade, and Good Standing, or no public entry at all. You change it yourself, any time, from your account. Whichever you choose, an employer can still confirm your status through Verify a Member — that never switches off, and it is what makes the credential worth holding.
How does an employer check my membership?
Through Verify a Member, free, without involving you. It returns membership status, grade, post-nominal entitlement, and Good Standing, and nothing more. Certificates and centre recognition are verifiable the same way.
Section five
Continuing Professional Development
The requirement applies at the four assessed grades. Affiliate, Student, Retired, and Honorary Fellow categories are exempt.
How much CPD must I do?
30 hours per CPD Year (1 January to 31 December), of which at least 15 Structured, at least 3 ethics, and at least 2 sustainability hours (rising to 3 from the 2028 CPD Year), plus at least one reflective practice record. The requirement is the same at every assessed grade — seniority shows in the complexity of what you do, not the hours.
What counts as CPD?
Anything producing a demonstrable development outcome. Attending your usual weekly operations meeting is work; leading the redesign of how that meeting reports risk, and learning from it, is CPD. Routine work that does not extend your competence does not qualify, however demanding it is.
What counts as Structured?
All IAM Certified Programmes, Professional Courses, Practice Library lessons, and Masterclass sessions, plus any endorsed qualification or course, and any formal facilitated learning led by a qualified instructor or institution. Self-directed learning — reading, informal mentoring, on-the-job learning — counts towards the 30 but never towards the 15 Structured.
Does CPD for another professional body count?
Yes, where it meets the requirements and you record it with the Institute. You do not do everything twice; you do record it in both places.
Does mentoring count?
Yes, for both mentor and mentee, under the IAM Mentoring and Professional Supervision Framework. Volunteering for IAM committees, panels, and working groups also counts.
What are the deadlines?
Record each activity within 30 days of completing it — December activities by 31 January. Keep outcome evidence for three years. Confirm your annual summary, including your reflective record and the domains you covered, by 31 January.
What happens if I am selected for audit?
At least 5% of members are sampled each year. It is routine quality assurance, not an accusation. You have 30 days to respond and another 30 to fix anything incomplete. Members who record as they go and attach evidence usually clear an audit with no further correspondence.
What if illness, parental leave, or caring interrupts my year?
Exemptions of up to 24 months are available for long-term illness, parental leave, caring responsibilities, unemployment, bereavement, or a career break — apply personally to membership@instam.org. Parental leave adjusts automatically pro rata on notification. You stay in Good Standing throughout, and part-year exemptions reduce every minimum in proportion.
What happens if I fall behind?
A three-stage procedure, designed to bring you back rather than remove you: a remediation notice with 60 days’ grace; then a formal warning with a completion plan and "CPD Conditional" status, during which you are not in Good Standing and may not use your post-nominals; and only if non-compliance persists, referral to the Board. If you did the CPD but failed to record it, it is treated as a recording problem and closed once corrected.
Section six
Programmes, courses, and qualifications
What the Institute teaches, and what each thing leads to.
What is the difference between the programmes, courses, and the Practice Library?
The five Certified Programmes teach and assess the whole discipline at a Career Stage and lead towards a membership grade. The 250 Professional Courses are standalone CPD of one to two hours. The 300 Practice Library lessons are 15 to 20 minutes each, teaching one thing and ending with you doing it. The 23 Masterclasses are live, taught, in cohort, over three levels totalling 54 learning hours.
Do the courses lead to a qualification or a grade?
No. The Professional Courses, Practice Library lessons, and Masterclasses are continuing professional development: they carry no credit, sit in no qualifications framework, and confer no entitlement to any grade. They count as Structured CPD. Admission to a grade comes through the three routes.
Are the IAM Certified Programmes regulated qualifications?
No, and the Institute is explicit about it. They are internally regulated by the Institute against its own Professional Standards, and carry no status under any national qualifications framework or regulator. That is deliberate: the Standards are designed for international use, and qualifications regulation is national. Separately, the Institute is preparing to offer regulated diplomas — see Qualifications.
What are the Qualifications listed on your site?
Ten regulated diplomas at Levels 5 to 7 that the Institute has applied to offer through centre approval with an awarding partner. Approval is in its final stages; nothing is open for enrolment yet. Register your interest and we will tell you the moment it opens.
Does completing a programme make me a Member?
Not automatically. Completion satisfies the learning requirement for the corresponding grade; you still apply, and you still need the qualifying experience. The programme does the assessment work, so admission on that route follows quickly.
How long do the programmes take?
Essentials Foundation about four weeks (20 learning hours); Practitioner, Professional, and Strategic Professional about eight weeks (40 to 56 hours); Strategic Leader is portfolio-based with a strategic case assessment. A Role Mastery option adds about four weeks and a second certificate naming your role.
Is a programme taken at a Recognised Centre the same as one taken with the Institute?
Identical. The centre delivers and supports; the Institute owns the programme, sets and moderates the assessment, and makes every awarding decision. Same programme, same standard, same certificate, same membership pathway, wherever you study.
Online or face-to-face — does it matter?
Not to the credential. Delivery mode is a matter of access, not standard, and the certificate does not distinguish. Choose what fits your work and your life.
Can I take a lesson from a different grade’s library?
Yes. The grade libraries are a guide to pitch, not a fence. Take a lesson from a higher grade to look ahead, or a lower one to refresh a fundamental.
Are the lessons and courses accessible?
They are built to be used on a phone or in a browser, with transcripts and captions, and they work at the text sizes and display modes you set. If something is not usable for you, tell us and we will fix it — see the Accessibility Statement.
Section seven
For employers
Corporate Membership, in-house CPD, and what you can and cannot see.
Can we enrol our whole team?
Yes. Corporate Membership runs in four bands from a single team to an enterprise partnership, with subscriptions discounted 15% to 45%. Staff may be enrolled at any tier or grade they qualify for, and Affiliate is open access, which makes organisation-wide recognition straightforward.
Does corporate enrolment change the admission standard?
Never. It changes who pays and how enrolment is administered, nothing else. Every application for an assessed grade is assessed individually against the Professional Standards, and the Institute’s discretion to refuse is unaffected. Affiliate and Student admission is immediate.
What can our Corporate Coordinator see?
Aggregate data only — numbers enrolled by tier and grade, and the proportion on track, at risk, or complete for the CPD Year. The Coordinator cannot see the content of anyone’s CPD records, reflective records, evidence, exemption applications, or non-compliance correspondence, cannot record CPD on anyone’s behalf, and has no role in disciplinary matters.
Membership is paid by us — is it ours?
No. Membership is personal. It belongs to the individual, is held in their own right, and travels with them, CPD record included, if they leave. That is what makes it a professional credential rather than an employment benefit.
Can our in-house training count as our staff’s CPD?
Yes, where it produces a demonstrable development outcome. A weekly team meeting is work; a facilitated workshop teaching a new risk-reporting method, with defined outcomes and materials, is CPD. In-house learning can also be recognised by the Institute in advance so it qualifies automatically for enrolled staff — submissions are included in your corporate band.
Can we license the Practice Library for our team?
Yes. Series may be licensed for internal delivery using your own examples; four lessons fill a one-hour team slot with the action carried out together. Contact corporate@instam.org.
How do we find or check candidates?
Search the IAM Directory by grade, country, sector, or Competency Domain to find recognised professionals, and use Verify a Member to confirm a designation on a CV — free, instant, and without contacting the candidate.
Section eight
For centres and providers
Delivering the programmes, or having your own provision endorsed.
Can our organisation deliver the IAM programmes?
Yes, as a Recognised Centre. Universities, colleges, training providers, and employers worldwide may apply. The centre delivers; the Institute awards. Recognition is decided on evidence by an independent panel, granted for two renewable years.
What is the difference between recognition and endorsement?
Recognition lets you deliver the Institute’s own Certified Programmes. Endorsement puts the Institute’s mark on provision you own and deliver, after review against the Professional Standards. They are separate schemes with separate fees, and an organisation may hold both.
What does it cost to become a centre?
Centre recognition has two fee streams: a fee to apply and be approved, and continuing fees covering the annual centre charge and per-learner registration. Every amount is published on the Fees page and reduces by band for middle- and low-income economies. There is no minimum spend — register three learners in a year and you pay for three.
What does endorsement cost for a short online course?
One fee, set by the size of the course in Programme Learning Hours, covering a two-year endorsement — with no annual fee, no portfolio charge, and no monitoring visit. Renewal every two years is half the fee. The figures are on the Fees page, and they are set deliberately below the cost of comparable accreditation and CPD certification schemes, because the Institute’s interest is in the learners: each may register with the Institute and receive a co-badged eCertificate and digital badge for a single £25 fee that also makes them a Student Member.
How long does approval take?
Express interest and we respond within five working days with the application pack and a briefing. From a complete application, the target for a recognition decision is 30 working days. Induction follows within 20 working days of a positive decision.
What protects learners if a centre stops delivering?
Every learner is registered with the Institute within twenty working days of enrolment. If delivery is disrupted, the Learner Protection Policy carries registered learners through to completion — by teach-out, transfer, or directly with the Institute — with no second registration fee, and everything already achieved stays theirs and verifiable indefinitely.
Does paying a fee improve our chances?
No, and the Institute says so in its published schemes. No fee and no commercial relationship secures or influences any recognition, approval, endorsement, or awarding decision. Application fees are non-refundable precisely because they buy an assessment, not an outcome. See how the Institute is governed.
