IAM Grade Navigator

Find your grade and route under the IAM Membership Regulation (IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001). Enter your qualifications and experience; the Navigator applies the published criteria and produces a report you can keep.

Find your place in the profession

Which IAM grade fits you — and which route gets you there?

Answer three short questions about your IAM Certified Programmes, your prior certificated learning, and your experience. The Navigator locates your Professional Membership grade under the IAM Membership Regulation, compares the three parallel admission routes, and prepares a personal application report.

  • Grade recommendation across all four assessed grades — Associate, Member, Fellow, and Senior Fellow — plus the tiers open to you today.
  • Route-by-route comparison: Certified Programme, Recognition of Prior Learning, and Experience-Assessed, with decision timeframes from Table 2.
  • A printable report listing what you already meet, what to prepare, and your path to the next grade.

Runs entirely on your device; nothing is saved or sent. About three minutes.

An informational aid to the IAM Membership Regulation (IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001, Edition 1.0, in effect from 1 January 2027). The Regulation is authoritative, and the Board retains discretion over every admission (Regulation 3.1), with a right to the grounds and a review if an application is refused (Regulation 3.6). Applications are made through the IAM Membership Platform at www.instam.org.

Which IAM Certified Programme have you completed?

Certified Programmes are the Institute’s own quality-assured programmes; each is aligned to one assessed grade. Choose the highest you have completed.

What is your highest prior certificated learning outside the IAM?

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) route credits certificated learning assessed under the IAM Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (IAM-RPL-2026-001). Levels are expressed generically and are not tied to the qualifications framework of any single country.

Which fields count as relevant? Business administration; business or organisational management; administrative, office, or operations management; public administration; project or programme management; human resource management; finance or accounting; governance, risk, and compliance; and other cognate management or administration disciplines. If your learning is in another field, you may instead apply through the Experience-Assessed route.
How much qualifying experience do you have?

Qualifying experience is experience in a role involving professional administration or administrative management, assessed on the substance of the role rather than the job title. Part-time experience counts in proportion to full-time hours; concurrent roles are counted once; and independent practice, including work as a virtual assistant, counts on the same basis as employed experience (Regulation 3). Whole years; the lower three figures are counted within the ones above them.

What counts as a qualifying role? For example: administrative officer or coordinator; executive, personal, virtual, or team assistant; office or administrative manager; business support manager; operations manager or operations director; practice manager; facilities manager; programme or project manager; company secretary or governance officer; departmental or functional manager; and chief administrative or chief operating officer.

Before you apply: what the Regulation asks of every applicant
  • Accurate information. Applications must be accurate and complete; the Institute may verify qualifications, experience, and identity with your consent, and membership obtained on false information may be terminated (Regulation 3.8).
  • Declaration. Declare at application any matter that a member would have to notify under Regulation 8.11 — a relevant conviction, a sanction by another body, a disqualification, a personal insolvency where you hold financial responsibilities, or dismissal for gross misconduct (Regulation 3.8).
  • Age. 18 or over for Affiliate and the assessed grades; 16 or over for Student Membership (Regulation 3.10).
  • Process. A complete application is acknowledged within 2 working days; the decision follows within the Table 2 maximum period, counted in the Institute’s working days from the day after the application is complete, with the clock stopped while the Institute awaits information it has requested; if evidence falls short you get one opportunity to address it within 60 calendar days (Regulations 3.3, 3.4, 1.3).
  • Adjustments. The Institute makes reasonable adjustments to the application and assessment process for applicants with a disability (Regulation 3.7).
  • If refused. You may request the grounds in writing, ask for a review under the IAM Appeals and Complaints Policy, and apply again after six months (Regulation 3.6).
  • Fees. Subscriptions are tiered by country of residence using the World Bank classification and denominated in sterling; a one-off application fee applies at first assessed application and a separate fee to upgrades; a 14-day cooling-off period applies; hardship provisions are available (Regulation 5).
  • Members of other bodies. Where the IAM has a reciprocal recognition agreement with your body, an expedited route may apply; the agreements are published on the IAM website (Regulation 11.7).
The evidence, and how to prepare it
Every route is decided on documents: your curriculum vitae; certificates and, for the RPL route, transcripts; Certified Programme completion where you rely on it (verified from the Institute’s records); and Statements of Professional Experience covering the qualifying experience you rely on — given by your employer, or by you where Schedule A of the Membership Regulation permits, confirming the role, its dates, its scope, and the substance of its responsibilities against the Competency Domains. Identity is verified electronically. Admission is determined by the Institute on documentary evidence. Your CV and any statement you give must be your own work and true; false or altered evidence is refused (Regulation 3; Code of Ethics 2.2.3 and 5.1.2). The form and content of a Statement are set out in Schedule A of the Membership Regulation and Section 7 of the IAM Individual Membership Guidance (IAM-IMG-2026-001).
Two aids before you write: the IAM Progression Profiler places you against the Progression Matrix domain by domain, and Annex A of the IAM Professional Standards describes what competence looks like in each domain at each Career Stage — which is what a Statement of Professional Experience should establish.

The architecture of membership

Every tier and grade, side by side

Already a member? Existing members continue at their grade from 1 January 2027 without re-application or re-assessment; obligations apply from that date and fees and terms from the first renewal after it (Regulation 12.5). Upgrades are by application under Regulation 3.9.

Nine tiers under the IAM Membership Regulation: two open registration tiers, one student tier, four assessed grades aligned to the Career Stages of the IAM Professional Standards, the Retired variants, and Honorary Fellow conferred by the Board.

This report is an informational aid generated locally by the IAM Grade Navigator from the answers entered; nothing was saved or sent. It is not a decision of the Institute: admission is governed by the IAM Membership Regulation, applications are assessed on documentary evidence, and the Board retains discretion over every application (Regulation 3.1); an applicant who is refused may request the grounds, ask for a review under the IAM Appeals and Complaints Policy, and reapply after six months (Regulation 3.6). The authoritative criteria are Regulations 2 and 3 of IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001; timeframes are from Table 2 and CPD obligations from Table 1 and Regulation 6.
